Dr. J. Zimmerman discusses the role of the nervous system in health and disease
A percentage of patients that present themselves to the chiropractor with lower back pain also have bladder issues such as urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence is the inability to hold back urination. This is also very common in pregnancy due to the stress on the lower back and pelvis from the increase in body weight. The network of nerves that comes through the lumbar and sacral areas of the spine control bladder function. Subluxation and misalignment of the sacrum, lumbar vertebra and pelvis can cause decreased neural impulse flow to the bladder and bladder dysfunction may result. The chiropractor corrects the alignment of these structural areas and improves the nerve flow to the bladder, helping to improve bladder function. In the case of pregnancy, the addition of Webster's technique on the soft tissue of the pelvic area can help speed the correction process along.
