Back Pain Q&A

When should I visit a chiropractor for back pain?

A chiropractic visit is warranted whether you have muscle aches, pain that extends from your buttocks and down your leg, limited range of motion in your spine, or shooting and stabbing pain. Usually, the sooner you seek treatment the better, but it’s especially important to see a chiropractor right away if you experienced a fall, sports injury, car accident, or other blow to your back.

What causes back pain?

Back pain has so many causes, many of which are preventable. Dr. Zimmerman can help you understand how habitual ways of holding yourself may actually be doing damage. Certain muscle imbalances, postural irregularities, and vertebrae subluxation — when the bones of the spine come out of alignment — can cause your pain. A pinched nerve, herniated disc, degenerative disease, or arthritis are other common causes of back pain.

How can a chiropractor help?

After a detailed medical history, Dr. Zimmerman will examine you, paying special attention to your areas of sensitivity. Depending on the suspected cause of your pain, he may order specific tests to confirm a diagnosis.

Manual adjustments, during which your joints are put into alignment, is commonly used to alleviate pain. He may also prescribe specific stretches, exercises, and other rehab you can do at home between visits to keep your back healthy.

A chiropractor can also help relieve muscle tension through specific assisted stretches and therapies that include TENS and ultrasound treatment.

Can Dr. Zimmerman help with lower back pain?

Chiropractic adjustments are extremely effective for the treatment of lower back pain. A combination of stretching, spinal manipulation, and other therapies is a solid alternative to self-medication. And, even after your lower back pain has been alleviated, regular visits can help it from returning.

How often will I need to see a chiropractor?

The number of visits required to resolve your back pain really depends on the source. You may benefit from weekly or semi-monthly visits for just a few weeks or several months. You and Dr. Zimmerman will work together to determine what’s best for your health and your schedule. As your pain resolves, visits may occur less often, but regular check-ins help keep you healthy.
