Chiropractor Discusses Aging and Anti-aging Health Tips

The study of aging in medicine continues to amaze me. In the quest for eternal life, science has determined that we can take certain hormonal supplements that diminish in our body as we get older to recapture the glory days of our youth. Naturally, the medical prescription of these hormones tends to be a little more than what was naturally diminished. This way we can "feel younger" than we actually are. Oh, did I mention that to recapture our youth, you have to be fairly wealthy, as these hormonal treatments with growth hormone and testosterone are pretty expensive? The good news is that I have a prescription for healthy aging that will help you to feel younger, keep you healthier and not really cost you too much more than you already spend. The key to aging well involves three main areas; movement, hydration, and nutrition. First, motion is the key. I had an elderly patient in his 80's who looked like he was in his 60's tell me, if you don't move around, you will rust. Exercise is the key. You have to move every day. Not work type move, like at your job, but something else in addition to your regular activities. Walk, bike, swim, yoga, weight train, pilates, jog. Just do it. You have to move. In addition, if you work out first thing in the morning and do not eat anything other than a protein food for the first two hours after training, the human growth hormone in your body will be more readily produced, helping to combat the effects of aging. For free, no less!! Our body's are made up of 70% water. As we get older, out tissues and cells tend to dehydrate more easily. Replace these lost fluids with plenty of water throughout the day and not only will cell aging slow down, your skin will wrinkle less and your muscles and nerves will work better. That's another free one!! The adage, you are what you eat is very true. Eat high salt, chemical laced food and your body will respond with decreased health and performance. Eat fresh, lively foods without chemicals and you will be healthier and have less illness. Here is some advice that is not free, but well worth the expense to ensure a long healthy life. Take some vitamins every day. Even one multi-vitamin daily was shown to improve the health of people over 55. Fish oil supplements improve heart health, prevent stroke and keep the brain functioning to ward off senile issues like dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Also, take some anti-oxidant supplements like C, E, selenium and astaxanthan to help the cells in your body to be healthier and to help prevent diseases like cancer. If you pay attention to these three important areas, getting older won't be a bad thing, it will be a cool thing filled with fun and good health.

Chiropractor Thought for the Week: There is a fourth thing to do to help the body age well. Continue with your regular chiropractic care. Spinal adjustments, as performed by a chiropractor, help the spinal bones to move properly which can help to prevent arthritis. Adjustments also balance the spinal musculature which keeps you moving better and more freely. Lastly, the affect spinal adjustments have on the nervous system is well documented and this will help your body to function better. Better function equals greater health.
