Pregnancy Care for Athletes and Fitness Enthusiasts. More and more athletic women chose to train and even compete during pregnancy. Research shows that regular exercise is good for the expectant mother and unborn child. Woman who train regulary prior to pregnancy are rarely discouraged from stopping their fitness training. On the other hand, it is not a good idea for woman who do not exercise to start intense or extreme exercise programs once becoming pregnant. For these women, low intensity exercise like walking and light resistance training is encouraged. Some women chose to continue to compete in their respective sports while pregant. Pregnant women who suffer sports trauma from a fall or blow to the abdomen can damage the placenta. Later in pregnancy, as the fetus moves higher in the womb and the fetus has less protection from the pelvic bones there is an increased risk of injury to the fetus with impact injuries.
High Risk Sports that can be problematic during pregnancy:
Contact sports like hockey, boxing, wrestling, soccer, rugby have an increased risk of abdominal trauma.
High Risk sports like gymnastics, horseback riding skating, skiing and racquetball all have inherent dangers to the pregnant athlete.
Chiropractic care is essential during pregnancy for all pregnant women, even more so for those who exercise regulary.
Spinal adjustments performed by the chiropractor on a regular basis maintains the integrity of the musculoskeletal areas important for a healthy pregnancy. The pelvis must be in proper alignment for labor and delivery. Pelvic alignment also keeps the surrounding soft tissue, particularly the round ligament from causing uterine contraint ( a common cause of breech births). In addition, the prevention of nerve impulse disharmony that comes from misalignments of the spine allows the reproductive organs to recieve normal nerve flow to the unboirn child for health and proper function.
The chiropractor should be a part of every pregnant women's pregnancy plan.
