New Research Shows Chiropractic During & After Birth Improves Health Outcomes

Recent Research Reveals Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy & After Birth Improves Health Outcomes

According to recent research “wellness care” is the most common reason why parents bring their children to chiropractors.  Ear, nose and throat issues are a close second.  Most people think of chiropractors as neck and back pain specialists however, the main reasons for pediatric visits to chiropractors are not neck and back pain related. Parents seek wellness care and care for breathing issues (like asthma), ear infections, colic and bedwetting by the chiropractor.

“It is now more common for parents to seek wellness care for their children” stated Pamela Stone DC, CACCP a chiropractor specializing in pregnancy and children and one of the authors of the study. Stone continued “Parents are seeking chiropractic not because of their dissatisfaction with medicine, but because they have different health and wellness beliefs and views.”

“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the overall function of the body” stated Shannon O’Brien DC another researcher involved in the study. O’Brien added “There are now numerous research studies that show improved health outcomes of pregnant mothers and their children who undergo chiropractic care and the addition of this one adds further weight to the evidence.”

Basic science shows that the blockage of spinal nerves from misaligned or shifting vertebra can cause disruption in neural impulses which can lead to malfunction in the body's systems which can affect the health of children. Since every single function of the body is controlled by the nervous system it is not shocking to anyone that by correcting spinal alignment and removing blockages to the nervous system ( that controls the body) would lead to an improvement in health.

The study looked at a group of children who were under chiropractic care from birth and the mothers who were under chiropractic care during pregnancy.  The children in the study averaged regular chiropractic care for 9-13 years.

All of the mothers responded that they felt  good during their pregnancy with less incidence of pregnancy relelated symptoms suchs as low back pain, extremity numbness, and generalized soreness. All the children were breastfed and experienced healthy childhoods without suffering from typical childhood illnesses.  All parents reported their child’s health to be better than other children of the same age.

The results of this study show the need for further investigation and research into the topic of childhood wellness and chiropractic care.  Chiropractic care is all natural and does not involve the use of drugs and medications.  Further research would shed light on the topic of chiropractic care boosting immune system function and improving childhood health outcomes
