Ingredient in Hot Dogs - Cancer? Covid-19 Update, Pregnancy Care

Sodium nitrite is a synthetic preservative added to meats like hot dogs and deli meat to help them maintain that nice pink color. The problem is, in the presence of heat—especially high heat—nitrites can combine with amines in processed meat to form nitrosamines, and these are carcinogenic. Nitrosamines inflict cellular damage and have been linked to cancer, typically in your colon, bladder, stomach, or pancreas.  The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is currently considering listing nitrite in combination with amines as a known carcinogen.  Think twice before you buy that package of hot dogs and bacon.  The good news is that more and more nitrate free brands are showing up on the market shelves including hot dogs and cold cuts. Look for all natural or uncured hot dogs, bacon and cold cuts.  Since we are speaking of hotdogs, here is more depressing news.  You might not be aware of this, but nearly every time you eat bread in a restaurant or consume a hamburger or hotdog bun you are consuming bromide an endocrine-disrupting chemical commonly used in flours. The use of potassium bromate as an additive in commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures. Bromated flour is “enriched” with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies use it because it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks. However, Pepperidge Farms and other successful companies manage to use only unbromated flour without any of these so-called “structural problems.” Studies have linked potassium bromate to kidney and nervous system damage, thyroid, gastrointestinal discomfort, and cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies potassium bromate as a possible carcinogen. Potassium bromate is banned for food use in Canada, China, and the European Union (EU).  Wow.  Eating has become a scary thing.  The bottom line is with a little diligence in the supermarket, reading labels, you can find food without these ingredients.

Thought for the Week:  The average American gains close to one pound during the six-week period from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.  Sadly, most of us may be above average!

Pregnancy / Prenatal Chiropractic Care:  More and more women are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care in pregnancy. The most common complaint where women seek chiropractic care in pregnancy is for low back pain.  84% of patients receiving spinal manipulative therapy reported relief of back pain during pregnancy. There was significantly less likelihood of back labor when spinal adjustments were administered during pregnancy. The chiropractor is an extremely important part of the prenatal, pregnancy health care team.  Not only does the chiropractor perform adjustments to keep the pelvis in line, improve neural impulse flow to the reproductive organs and relax soft tissue ligaments that support the front of the pregnant abdomen, the obstetrically trained chiropractor is an all around pregnancy health care coach that can offer nutritional advice and exercise advise that can help the pregnant patient have a healthier pregnancy.

Covid-19 Update:  If you haven’t jumped on the vitamin D3 bandwagon for this pandemic, I honestly do not know what you could be waiting for.  More and more research is pointing to the effectiveness of vitamin D3 and its affect on the immune system and the correlation between vitamin D3 levels and mild cases of covid versus severe cases of covid. The British Medical Journal and the Lancet have both published studies that D deficiency is linked to greater severity of infection and particularly of the respiratory tract.  A recent published in the November 2021 journal Nutrients found that supplemental vitamin D decreased mortality rate 2.4 times in hospitalized patients.  The journal of Aging Clinical and Experimental Research wrote that vitamin D levels were strongly correlated to severity of covid illness.  In the study cited, 96% of the patients who had mild covid illness also had normal vitamin D levels, while in the severe or critical covid cases only 4% had normal vitamin D levels.  Normal vitamin D3 levels are considered to be between 40 and 60ng/ml.  It is very important to have your vitamin D levels checked while you are healthy, this way you have time to do something about it before contracting the covid virus.  Progressive functional medicine doctors and researchers suggest that supplemental vitamin D3 should be taken 35 units per pound of bodyweight in the winter, non-sun exposure months.

More on Ivermectin Treatment for Covid-19:  Dr. Tess Lawrie, director of the Evidence-based Medicine Consultancy in Bath, England found that based on a review of medical research that ivermectin prevents covid-19 deaths by 80%. Dr. Lawrie is frustrated that governments in the UK and USA are ignoring the beneficial effects of ivermectin as prophylaxis, its effect on speed to testing negative for the virus, on the need for mechanical ventilation, on reduced admissions to intensive care, and other outcomes that are clinically meaningful. Dr. Lawrie declared that had the drug ivermectin been employed in 2020, “when medical colleagues around the world first alerted the authorities to its efficacy, millions of lives could have been saved, and the pandemic with all its associated suffering and loss brought to a rapid and timely end.”  For those that missed my earlier articles on ivermectin, here is a quick background.  Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medicine that has been found to have extremely large anti-viral benefits.  The doctors that discovered ivermectin were awarded the Noble Peace prize.  The World Health Organization had placed ivermectin on a list of the top essential medications worldwide.  It has been given to over 60 million people with an extremely high safety rate.  It has wrongly been criticized as being a veterinary horse dewormer medicine.  Yes, it is anti-parasitic and if horses or people have a parasite, the medication works. The fact that it has anti-viral properties are being ignored.  Many drugs and medications have duel purposes.  Viagra was initially developed as a blood pressure medicine, now look what it is known for.
