Chiropractor's Thought for the Week....Spinal Adjustments for Newborns

Chiropractor's Thought for the Week: People often wonder why a chiropractor would check and or adjust a newborn baby.  On the surface, it seems that a chiropractor has no business being involved with a brand newborn baby.  The opposite is actually true and the chiropractor should be an important part of the childbirth team. When a baby is born, there is an amount of stress placed on the baby's cervical spine. The typical childbirth process involves rotation of the neck and doctor helping the baby to come through the pelvic opening by pulling on the babies head. In the best of cases, this creates a muscular stress on the neck which could cause upper cervical subluxation. In the worst of cases, traumatic childbirth with the use of forceps or vacuum extractors can severely misalign the cervical spine.  Once this happens, spinal nerve stress can lead to a weakened immune system, chronic ear infections, colic and croup symptoms. There is also evidence that the disruption in nerve flow can lead to attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (ADHD).  A chiropractor checking the spine of a newborn for alignment can contribute to giving every baby a chance at living a 100% healthy life.
