Chiropractor discusses possible solutions to the opioid addiction crisis

Chiropractic Thought for the Week:  According to the British Medical Journal, more than half of regular opioid users globally began the drug treatment due to back pain. Opioid treatment increases in frequency two to three times in the U.S. and Canada. This leaves little doubt that back pain in the U.S. starts many down the path of abuse. Sadly, the drugs produce only short-term pain relief in exchange for addiction concerns. Research shows minimal evidence of opioid efficacy and little-to-no increase in returning back-pain patients to work. “Chiropractors are not the problem,” Marc Siegel, MD, of New York University of Medicine at NYC Langone Medical Center and FOX News health commentator said. There is a growing body of research that validates the effectiveness of chiropractic services, leading many respected health care organizations to recommend chiropractic and its drug-free approach to pain relief. Chiropractic care offers a natural solution to pain relief, focusing on the underlying issue rather than simply masking your pain. Going to a chiropractor eliminates the need for opiods that often times lead the patient to habit forming addictions. The chiropractor needs to be considered in the discussion of opioid abuse and addiction. Seeking chiropractic care first before using drugs and medications could be a partial solution to pain medication addiction.
