Chiropractor discusses Chiropractic Radical Fundamentalism

Chiropractors Thought for the Week:  Radical fundamentalism exists in chiropractic.  One of the definitions of the word radical is "of or relating to origin."  Fundamentalism is a movement or attitude stressing strict and literal adherence to a set of basic principles.  The origin of chiropractic and it's basic principles have not changed one tiny bit since chiropractic's inception in 1895. As a matter of fact, text books written by chiropractors D.D Palmer and R.W. Stephenson in the early 1900's are so progressive and light years ahead of their time, that scientists today are only discovering principles that were already written about over 100 years ago!!  And when shown the original texts, today's scientists are amazed that these universal principles were hypothesized and published more than a century ago. It is very gratifying to have science, with its modern day technology, proving the chiropractic principles of health and healing. It is also a bit sad to know that the very principles of health and healing first written about by these radical chiropractors had labeled the chiropractors as quacks. And, 123 years later, chiropractic care is still not universally accepted as health care. Here is the bottom line.  The nervous system works in a closed loop.  The brain communicates to the body through the spinal cord and spinal nerves. The body responds to the brain with proper function and keeps the process going by sending communication back through the spinal cord and spinal nerves to the brain. If there is an interruption in this loop, as when vertebra of the spine subluxate (the bones of the spine move out of place and impact a nerve), the body's communication process is disrupted and less than optimal health is the result.  That being said,  I have an essential duty as a chiropractor.  That duty is to continue to practice radical chiropractic fundamentalism and try as hard as I can to educate my community about the essential need for regular chiropractic care.
