Atlas held up the world. Atlas also holds up your head.

Did you know that the very first bone in the spine is at the top of the neck and it is called the Atlas vertebra?  Named after the Greek Titan Atlas whose job was to hold up the world on his shoulders.  The Atlas vertebra is responsible for “holding” your head.  The human head which weighs 9-12 lbs sits upon the Atlas bone. The extremely important brain stem protrudes through the Atlas vertebra and connects to the spinal cord.  The brain stem is an extremely important part of the nervous system and for overall health.  The brain stem is the regulatory area of the body.  All of the brains messages to the body’s systems, organs and tissues are processed there. This makes the Atlas vertebra very important to your health and wellbeing.  If the Atlas is out of alignment, physical effects can include headaches, chronic nausea, hearing problems, high blood pressure and weakened immune system.  This is why chiropractors typically check the neck alignment on their patients, regardless of their symptoms.
