Dear Practice Members:

Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking at the Southern New Jersey Psychoanalytical Conference at the Shore.  Your probably wondering why is a chiropractor speaking at a psychology conference?   I was asked to be a part of a panal discussion entitled "What is Normal?"   My duties were to talk about normal health and wellness.  Each panelist was given 15 minutes to discuss their topic and then the floor was open for discussion and questions.  I talked about how Wellness care is a philosophy that is not quite understood and most definitely underutilized.   The majority of the populus understands that exercise and nutrition is important, but the mentality of society leans towards a "wait until it's broken" approach to health.   I mentioned that in my 16 years of healthcare, I have noticed a shift in attitude over the last few years and a gradual awakening of more and more people understanding true health.

I also said that while wellness care and health is the responsibilty of the individual (remember my "lead a horse to water" opinion in last months newsletter), it is also the responsibility of the health practitioner.   Doctor in latin means teacher.   Doctors have to be the leaders in the healthcare movement, they have to take responsibility and teach wellness concepts.   In our practice, we try to go above and beyond and  place a huge effort on health education ( I am sure to the point of queeziness to some of you).   But, as a chiropractor, whose whole life has revolved around chiropractic healthcare, I understand the importance and the benefits of what we do.  Reduced spinal nerve pressure saves lives.   If I didn't treat that seriously, nor did I adequately convey the seriousness to you, I would fail in my responsibilities as your
"Doctor" / "Healthcare Coach."   So. I guess what I am trying to say is good health is the normal we should strive for.  To be healthy is your responsibility.  My responsiblity is to present the most important factors that lead to good health and guide you along the way.   And as far as I'm concerned,  good health starts with a healthy nervous system.

Health Tip Of The Month:  The wonder pill.   The daily one-a-day multivitamin.  A new report from UCLA encourages this daily supplement.  A multivitamin may reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and macular (eye) degeneration.  The people most in need of a one-a-day are dieters, obese adults, teenagers, seniors, people with poor eating habits, pregnant women and women of child bearing years.  Sounds like everybody.

Jokes Of the Month:

Bright Pharmacist

John was a clerk in a small drugstore but he was not much of a salesman. He could never find the item the customer wanted.

Bob, the owner, had about enough and warned John that the next sale he missed would be his last.

Just then a man came in coughing and he ask John for their best cough syrup. Try as he might John could not find the cough syrup. Remembering Bob's warning he sold the man a box of Ex-Lax and told him to take it all at once.

The customer did as John said and then walked outside and leaned against a lamp post.

Bob had seen the whole thing and came over to ask John what had transpired.

"He wanted something for his cough but I couldn't find the cough syrup. I substituted Ex-Lax and told him to take it all at once" John explained.

"Ex-Lax won't cure a cough!" Bob shouted angrily.

"Sure it will" John said, pointing at the man leaning on the lamp post.

"Just look at him. He's afraid to cough!"

Alibi

A guy was sitting quietly reading his paper when his wife walked up behind him and whacked him on the head with a magazine.

"What was that for?" he asked.

"That was for the piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name Mary Lou written on it," she replied.

"Two weeks ago when I went to the races, Mary Lou was the name of one of the horses I bet on," he explained.

"Oh honey, I'm sorry," she said. "I should have known there was a good explanation."

Three days later he was watching a ballgame on TV when she walked up and hit him in the head again, this time with the iron skillet, which knocked him out cold. When he came to, he asked, "What the hell was that for?"

She replied, "Your horse called."

Movie Review:   Again.  It was video central for me and the wife.  The Matchstick Men has the honor of having it shut off and rewinded about 15 minutes into it.  The Rundown with the Rock as a Bounty hunter was good enough for me.  Action and adventure, some comedy.  Radio was awesome.  Cuba Gooding as a handicapped young man, embraced by a southern football team.  True story and the man is still with the football team.  Duplex was a dark comedy, that was OK.   Ben Stiller was a little thin in this role.  The Core, was a nice mindless science fiction movie about saving the world by traveling to the center of the earth.  Good.  Something was lost in the translation with Lost in Translation.  I violated my don't see Oscar nominated artsy films.  It was watchable, but very slow and sort of depressing.  Second Hand Lions was the best of the pack.  Very good movie about two eccentric uncles who get stuck with there nephew.  Timeline was a time travel movie that should have went back in time to the day the movie was about to start production, then they could have decided not to make it.

That's all for this month.  Any comment or questions, please write back.
