Dear Practice Members:

I have thought of a very serious question that has  made me wonder about different ways to describe the service that I provide as a chiropractor.   The question is, how would the world get along without chiropractic care?   Chiropractic is only one hundred and eight years old.   For thousands of years, people have gotten along pretty well without chiropractors.  In Ireland, there are only 110 chiropractors and that number has only increased recently.  A very limited number of the Irish population visits a chiropractor.  In the United States, while there are close to 70,000 chiropractors nationwide, at any given time only about 35% of the population are under care.   So, on the surface it seems, that if chiropractic would dry up and go away, it wouldn't be much of a big deal.   For pain relief, there are plenty of services that could take care of the population's symptoms.  There are Physiotherapists, Orthopedic Doctors, Massage therapists, Acupuncturists and of course there is always a magical pill or drug that can be taken (With risk to your health, of course!).

So, why would we need chiropractic if we have all of the other modalities that exist and can easily fill the void?   Well, for one, chiropractic was never intended to be a duplication of the above services.  Its main purpose is not to treat pain or symptoms ( a well accepted byproduct of care, but not its purpose).   Chiropractic is a seperate and distinct, non-duplicated form of healthcare whose sole purpose is to improve function in the body by removing spinal nerve disruption.  Chiropractic is pro-active healthcare.  The spinal adjustment is performed to make sure that all of the systems of the body are functioning the best that they can, by restoring normal nerve flow.
If chiropractic care was used as a duplication medical care, who would miss it if it were gone?  No one.  If chiropractic care is used the way it was intended---- regular spinal check-ups and adjustments to optimize, maintain and preserve health, then the world, would indeed, be missing out on something special.

Health News:  Does Aspirin Prevent a Heart Attack?

While it is believed that aspirin prevents some first heart attacks, its fatal side-effects result in a higher death rate and its non-fatal side-effects such as internal bleeding and cataracts may appear only after years of aspirin use.   Surprisingly, the major study that doctors rely on to “prove” aspirin effectiveness didn’t give patients aspirin alone but buffered aspirin; the calcium and magnesium in buffered aspirin may have been responsible for some of the beneficial heart effects. However, supplemental magnesium and vitamin E have been shown to be more effective than aspirin in lowering heart attack rates as well as overall death rates. Supplemental magnesium and coenzyme Q10 have been shown to be more effective than aspirin in treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Health Tip:

Attention deficit disorder. Following a motor vehicle accident a 7-year-old boy began to suffer from memory loss, inability to concentrate, general agitation, loss of appetite, headache, difficulty chewing, ear pain, hearing loss, difficulty breathing, neck and leg pain.  His MD diagnosed attention deficit disorder (ADD) and prescribed Ritalin. However chiropractic spinal analysis revealed subluxation of C2 with a reversal of the normal neck curve.  After 12 weeks of care his neck curve had returned to normal; by 17 weeks his ADD disappeared and Ritalin was stopped. His other symptoms also disappeared and he returned to normal behavior.  After the insurance settlement the mother discontinued chiropractic care and the child’s symptoms gradually returned. He is back on Ritalin.

Joke of the Month:   A guy falls asleep on the beach for several hours and gets a horrible sunburn.  He goes to the hospital and is promptly admitted with second degree burns.  He was blistering and in agony.  The doctor prescribed Intravenous electrolytes, saline, a sedative and a viagra pill every hour. The nurse, rather astounded, said,  "What good will the viagra do him?"  The doctor replied, "It will keep the sheets off his legs."

Movie Review:  American Pie: The Wedding.   I wasn't a big fan of the other two movies.  Mostly gross out humor.  This movie was much better than the other two.  A movie must be good when the audience applauds at the end, as they did in the theater I was in.  Unless the theater was filled with Highschool boys.  Pirates of the Carribbean filled my need for the summer blockbuster.  Very good.  Johnny Depp was his usual extraordinary self.  I enjoyed every minute of this movie.  Intermission, the small independent Irish film shot in Dublin, starring Colin Farrell has gotten a lot of postive press, good reviews and has won awards at film festivals.   It was good.  Colin is my favorite actor the past couple of years and he did a great job in this movie, but I didn't get all the Dublin insider jokes, and I thinked they hyped the movie too much.  It makes your expectations very high.  The Man who sued God,  was brilliant.  Billy Connelly, the Scotish comedian did a great job in this movie.  It was more a light hearted story, than a full blown comedy.  And if you take it as that going into it, you will enjoy this film.

PUB Review:  Flew to Newcastle, England last weekend.  I arrived at 10pm,went and had dinner and then I was going to enjoy a Newcastle Brown Ale at the Crown Pagoda pub.  I knocked on the door.  Closed.  11:00pm on Saturday in the City.  I was bummed.  But I went to a Night Club called Buffalo Joes, it was like Maloney's in Margate, NJ.  I had my Newkie and went home.  Fun place, with lots of singing.  The crowd was much younger then me, but being me, I tired quickly and was back in the hotel by 1:00.   As far as Dublin goes.  I watched the Hurling championships in Kiely's of Donnybrook.  This is a good pub.  Home of the Leinster Rugby team, it gets packed on game night and has good atmosphere.  The food is good also.  The fish and chips were the best I have had.  Good Irish beer selection with Guiness, Beamish, Harp, Smithwicks, Kilkenny on tap with plenty of others to choose from.

That's all for this month.  Any comments, questions, or concerns about my movie tastes, please e-mail me.

Thank you,

Dr. J.  Zimmerman
